What We Do

Annual Exhibition

The annual exhibition is the highlight of The Rope's calendar, showcasing remarkable models built by members and welcoming contributions from non-members. JSMCC members also participate, fostering friendship. The tradition began in 1976 at Ginza ITOYA's gallery, continuing with resounding success. Since the 36th exhibition in 2011, Tokyo Kotsu Kaikan, conveniently located near JR Yurakucho Station, has been the regular venue, accommodating the growing interest and enabling larger displays. A photo gallery preserves the essence of these exhibitions, capturing the craftsmanship and club's history. It stands as a crowning event, fostering camaraderie and celebrating the wooden ship modeling community.

Regular Membership Meetings

We hold our General Meeting in June to review the past year's activities, plan for the upcoming year, approve the budget, elect new directors, and welcome new members. The meeting is at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo.

We also have Regular Meetings in September, December, and February. During these meetings, directors provide updates on our activities, and we invite special guests to speak about sailing ships and modeling. In December, we hold an auction and bazaar where members can buy and sell modeling items. Afterward, there's a social gathering with food and drinks. These events provide a chance for members to socialize and exchange information beyond modeling, as they come from various professions and backgrounds.

Hybrid (in person and online) Workshop Meetings

To share technical knowledge and modeling skill, Hybrid workshops are held quarterly both virtual and in-person attendees (and/or presenters). A hybrid meeting is a way to bring together people who prefer to attend a meeting in person with those who find it easier to join remotely.  Workshop consists of two sessions. Session 1 covers the basic skills and knowledge of modeling. Session 2 covers individual project and specific topics of the members. Presentations are made by a projector and parts and models under construction are usually brought to the session.

Training courses designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced level

To cater to enthusiasts of all levels, The Rope offers specialized training courses for beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced modelers. Led by experienced members, these courses provide comprehensive instruction and guidance, nurturing the growth of ship modeling skills.

For beginners, a dedicated course introduces newcomers to the basics of wooden ship modeling. Covering fundamental concepts, tools, and techniques, participants learn material selection, plan interpretation, and essential construction steps. Through hands-on practice and personalized guidance, beginners gain confidence and a solid foundation.

Intermediate-level learners can join courses that build upon their existing skills. Advanced modelers can take specialized courses to further hone their skills. With training for all levels, The Rope cultivates a holistic learning environment, nurturing growth, creativity, and a lifelong passion for wooden ship modeling.
